Adams Oshiomhole, the controversial former chairman of the All Progressives Congress and two-term governor of Edo, mid-West Nigeria missed death by the whiskers after an articulated truck rammed into his motorcade, which was en route a campaign stop in Usen, a rustic town in the state.

Two of Mr Oshiomhole’s police escorts were not so lucky as they lost their lives in the crash.

Mr Ize-Iyamu, the All Progressives’ Congress’s candidate for the September gubernatorial election, described the fatal accident as an assassination attempt and announced that he is suspending his campaign to provide support to those involved in the crash.

Mr Oshiomhole has been one of the arrowheads in a bitter campaign to oust the incumbent governor Godwin Obaseki, a former protege whose bitter feud with his estranged benefactor, forced him to move to the People’s Democratic Party.
