Orji Uzor Kalu, the Chief Whip of Senate said on Monday that he is open to contesting the 2023 presidency if asked to do so by his constituents.
The former governor made the remarks during private visits to two former heads of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar and General Ibrahim Babangida.
Mr Kalu, a flamboyant and outspoken former governor of Abia, in South-East Nigeria, was recently incarcerated for six months after being prosecuted and convicted for corruption. However, a Federal Court of Appeal overturned his conviction and he has made a quick return to the limelight.

“I am still in the Senate, and I will seek for re-election into the senate but if our people want me to serve as President, I will not hesitate,” he said.
He said that there was no zoning in the APC constitution, and that any member of the party was free to contest the presidency.

“Zoning is not a constitutional matter in APC, any person can contest any post in APC,” he said. On the issue of insecurity in Nigeria, he alleged that there was sabotage in the country’s security system. It seems that there are a lot of sabotage in our security system,” he said.
