Abiola Ajimobi, the engineer-turned politician is dead. Mr Ajimobi died after a week-long coma at a hospital in Lagos. A member of the All Progressives’ Congress, Mr Ajimobi was a former two-term governor of Nigeria’s Southwestern state of Oyo.

Prior to winning a contentious governorship election in 2011, Mr Ajimobi had served in the senate where he won an election as the candidate of the defunct All Nigeria People’s Party, one of the legacy parties that fused into the All Progressives’ Congress. He contested the governorship on the ANPP’s platform in 2007 but lost to Christopher Alao-Akala of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Mr Ajimobi had been critically ill for the past few weeks after reportedly contracting the COVID-19 coronavirus. He was being treated at a Lagos hospital before he slipped into a coma and eventually died on Thursday.
